Two Months Before Moving Day

  • Create a moving binder
    • Preparing for your move early will be invaluable as you get organized. The more organized your move, the less stressful it will be.
  • Start packing your first box
    • Keep your vital documents and small valuables here. Separate from other household items.
  • Back up your files
    • Before packing up your computer (in the coming weeks). Back up your files and photos. Keep the backups in the box mentioned above. Your files will probably be okay, but it's not worth taking the risk.
  • Gather quotes
    • Now is an excellent time to start getting quotes from moving companies and other service professionals needed to help make your move stress free.
  • Room-by-room inventory of items in your home
    • Creating a home inventory is not as tough as you think and has benefits beyond moving day.
  • Schools and Health Professionals
    • If schools, doctors, and other health professionals require changes, research and make necessary applications.

One Month Before Moving Day

  • Decide on a moving company
    • Whether using movers or renting a truck, it's time to sign the contract or make the reservation.
  • Buy packing supplies
    • Having enough of the right packing supplies can make your move much more manageable.
  • Plan your new home
    • Measure your furniture. Get the room dimensions in your new home and start planning how you'll make it your own. If you have the room dimensions at the new house, start planning how to arrange your furniture.
  • Contact your internet, tv, and utility providers
    • Set your disconnect date. Begin researching which providers you'll use at your destination and schedule a connection of your services.
  • Fill any prescriptions
    • Be sure to have enough to get you to your destination with extra time to search for a new doctor and pharmacy.
  • Set up home insurance
    • Your solicitor will request proof of your home insurance for your possession day, so start your research now. We have an excellent referral. Contact us for more information.

Two Weeks Before Moving Day

  • Change your address
    • Let the post office, insurance provider, food delivery, and Amazon know about your new address. Cancel or redirect scheduled deliveries and subscriptions.
  • Confirm dates with relevant parties and your real estate agent
    • Landlord or strata company for move-in/move-out. The moving company, truck rental, or storage unit.
  • Begin packing
    • Be sure to create a packing list to keep in your moving binder. Schedule enough time to complete the packing at least two days before your move date.

One Week Before Moving Day

  • Begin cleaning empty rooms
    • Even if you are not working on getting a security deposit back, you should do a thorough clean.
  • Collect all keys and garage door openers
    • They must be handed over to the real estate agent or new owners.

Moving Day

  • Sign the mover's inventory list
    • Make sure the mover provides you with a copy. This record of what they are moving ensures that nothing "disappears."
  • Final walkthrough
    • Double check every room to ensure no damage occurred during the loading process. Get final readings of utility meters.
  • Final cleaning
    • Go ahead of your movers to do your walkthrough and clean up any areas required in your new home.

After Arrival

  • Change Address
    • Submit address change requests for your license and other identifications.
